About Eagle Guitar
Eagle Guitar can trace its origins..
to San Diego in the early 80s where owner JR Lawing made his start dealing vintage instruments and amplifiers part-time while touring with national acts including Greg Allman, Elvin Bishop, and many more. Deciding to move into the business full-time, Lawing was a partner in Guitars West, one of the dealers responsible for the “British (amp) invasion” of the late 80s/early 90s, and finally started Sunset Music in the early 1990s.
Sunset Music, which had locations across Southern California and eventually in Meridian, Idaho, was one of the first and largest dealers of Fender Custom Shop Masterbuilt instruments worldwide and Lawing was always a welcome sight at the custom shop, where he would visit to personally commission guitars for his customers and keep the builders supplied with Sunset Music and Wildwest Kennels T-shirts. Sunset Music was also Idaho’s only Gibson Custom Shop and Acoustic Super Dealer and the first Paul Reed Smith guitar dealer in the state. JR also brought Mesa Boogie amplifiers to Idaho and had a flourishing store with a wonderful customer base. Unfortunately, Sunset Music did not survive the economic crash of the mid-2000s.
After a brief retirement from “the biz”, where he worked in real estate, Lawing decided it was time to get back to his true love and started Eagle Guitar Co. in 2015. In addition to bringing PRS back to the Treasure Valley, JR continues to carry only the instruments, amps, and accessories that he would use on stage and prides himself on helping customers find the instrument that best fits their needs. Additionally, after partnering with Chris Murray of Murray Amplifiers, Lawing has created the Eagle Guitar Masterverb amp, which is a recreation of the 1959 Bassman/1960s reverb unit combo that he has used on stage for over thirty years.
If you are local to Idaho, stop in and say hi! Eagle Guitar is the guitar shop with the culture and ‘vibe’ that you miss from the old days.
If you’re not local, give a call or send an email, there are always new and cool things in the store.
